Desktop app automatic updates and early access

How the Nanus desktop app downloads and installs new versions by itself, how to update straight away and how to get preview versions early.

How it works

The desktop app updates itself. At start-up, and then every 6 hours if it stays open, it checks for a new version, downloads it while you work and verifies its digital signature before keeping it ready. Your data stays where it is.

  • The Home page shows Nanus … is ready with It installs by itself when you close Nanus. and the What’s new link.
  • If you do nothing, the new version installs when you close the app: when you reopen it you are up to date. The Close Nanus? window also reminds you that Version … will be installed when Nanus closes.

Update straight away

  1. Save any open forms.
  2. On the Home page tap Update now and confirm: Nanus closes and reopens in the new version.

Unsaved changes will be lost: save before updating.

If you installed Nanus with the MSI package (Windows) or the .deb or .rpm packages (Linux), installing on close does not happen: use Update now, and the system will ask for the administrator password.

Preview versions

If you want new features earlier, you can choose preview (beta) versions: they arrive before everyone else and may have a few rough edges, but your data stays as safe as always.

  1. Open Settings → Users and sign-in → Early access.
  2. Tick Get preview versions: Nanus immediately checks for a newer preview version.
  3. To go back to the versions for everyone, untick it: this applies from the next version on.

If something is not right with a preview version, write to the team from Settings → Support and feedback.

Common problems

  • The installation did not succeed: try Update now again; the version stays ready and can also be installed on close. Alternatively, download the new version from nanus.it/download and install it over the current one.
  • No notice appears: you already have the latest version, or the computer was not connected to the internet when it checked. The version number is at the bottom of the left column.
  • Your choice could not be changed: the preview versions tick was not saved; try again.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to download every version from the website?

No, the app updates itself. The website is only needed for the first installation or if an update fails.

If I untick preview versions, do I go straight back to the previous version?

No: you stay on the installed version and get the next version for everyone.
